(Re)Opening in the Time of COVID

And so it begins… again. Our building doors have been closed since March 15th. We rolled with the changes and quickly shifted to virtual classes via Zoom. In June, we made the decision to surrender our lease and take a leap of faith- sticking with virtual or outdoor classes only until we could gather together again. Now, on the eve of the new year, our new building is ready and awaiting our return.

Coronavirus cases are still on the rise and it is still something on the forefront of our minds. So what is best to keep our community safe both physically and mentally? What is best to keep Greenville Yoga sustainable and here to serve for the long term? When in doubt, I try to follow the middle path. From Jack Kornfield, “There is a middle way between the extremes of indulgence and self-denial, free from sorrow and suffering. This is the way to peace and liberation in this very life.” Reflecting on this sentiment, I began searching for a way to find the middle path to keep everyone safe, while meeting our needs for community and connection.

First, it was asked what felt right for each teacher, personally. Then we responded accordingly. Those teachers that want to return in person will do so. Those that wish to stay home and continue virtual will do just that. Second, I spent some time viewing other yoga studios around the country and their response to the pandemic, as well as spending time researching DHEC and CDC recommendations. My aim is for those who wish to return, that we provide the most safe environment possible. (More details on our next blog post.)

Again, we know this is not the ideal time to return in person. I know some of you only feel safe at home, while others have lost their yoga practices and need the still, quiet yoga space as your anchor. We are doing our best to meet both needs in the safest way possible for all.

While opening is typically a grand occasion, we are doing things a little quieter this time around. We will had a soft opening on Sunday, January 3rd. A virtual tour was held for all of our virtual-preferred community members to see our space from home. A (mask mandatory, socially distant) drop-in was held with garage doors open for plenty of fresh air. It was hard not to hug one another, but we did it! Thank you all for coming to bless our new space. May it be a beacon of light and hope for all who enter.

With love,

Liz
