Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. ~Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 and will turn 95 on Thursday. Currently he is in a hospital in South Africa. His words above meant so much to me when I first read them. I noticed them again when making a handout for our teacher trainees. This quote was one I had starred, underlined and rewritten. Let us not forget his words or his legacy.
Nelson Mandela was born in South Africa and became actively involved in the anti-apartheid movement in his 20s. For 20 years, he directed a campaign of peaceful, non-violent defiance against the South African government and its racist policies. In 1993, Mandela and South African President were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to tear down the country’s apartheid system. In 1994, Mandela was inaugurated as South Africa’s first black president (at the age of 75). In 2009, Mandela’s birthday (July 18) was declared Mandela Day to promote global peace and celebrate the South African leader’s legacy. This Thursday, celebrate Mr. Mandela and create a small act of peace in your community. Be big. Be powerful beyond measure.
