I used to embark on each new year glassy-eyed and hopeful that this would be the year… This would be the year of no changes or upheaval. This would be the year life would be filled with peace. This would be the year magic would happen. This would be the year…
But this year I see things a little differently. As I begin this new year, I know things will very much be as they have been in all the years past. There will be changes. There may be upheavals. There may be peace. There may not be peace. There may be magical moments. Maybe I am starting to finally understand that life is a series of events that create optimal circumstances for our growth. The peace that we find in those circumstances is what we have control over. In my study of the Bhagavad Gita for the last three years, I have found the recurring theme of steadiness as the path to freedom. The text says we should have steadiness in sukkha (satisfactoriness) and dukkha (unsatifactoriness).
So this year, instead of wishing for all things wonderful for myself and for each of you, I have a new list of wishes for us in 2017… May we find steadiness of heart and mind in the midst of the pleasant and unpleasant. May we all learn and find the gifts in what life brings to our door. May we all live in the present moment as often as we can. And may we all love each other with big, wide-open hearts!
Much love and many blessings in the new year! ~Liz
