“God is not found in the soul by adding anything but by subtracting.” ~Meister Eckhart
I recently read that in China the polite answer to “How are you?” is “I am very busy, thank you.” I wonder when this answer will spread to our culture. It seems to me we are busy all the time. There is always more to be done and our self-worth is determined by how much we have to do. How often do you take time to rest? How often do you put aside the to do list to just be?
Personally, I used to find it hard to just be. Things swirl in my head and to do lists run like crazy. Then finally I realized the world will continue to spin without me, the to do’s can be done tomorrow. My children and family won’t always be here or want me to be here. And one day I may not even be here. The practice of rest is just as important to the soul as the practice of yoga, meditation and prayer.
Today in Greenville it is grey and rain is predicted. Take advantage. Stay in your pajamas a little longer. Sit in your chair and just be. Make this practice a priority and save the busyness for tomorrow.
“A being is free only when it can determine and limit its activity.” ~Karl Barth
