Spiritual Friendships

Georg Feuerstein wrote this wonderful book titled “The Deeper Dimensions of Yoga.”  Each chapter has history, lessons, and thoughts regarding Yoga as a way of life.  One chapter that I think about often is titled “Spiritual Friendship.”  In this chapter he reminds us to keep friends that lift us up rather than hold us back.  When we start or travel on this journey, there are many pitfalls, setbacks, periods of dark and light.  It is important we have friends that can be with us through this.  I believe Spiritual Friendships are those that share common values and high ethical standards, helping us raise the bar for one another.  They are those that you can call in the middle of the night because you know they care and you know they will understand.  They are those that exemplify “love in action.”

“Worldly friends produce worldly thoughts and intentions, whereas spiritual friends uplift our mind and heart.  How can we tell a worldly friend from a spiritual friend?  A worldly friend’s mind revolves around money, work, sex, pleasure, success, etc.  His or her speech will be course, uninspiring, repetitive, divisive, idle, and hurtful.  There will be little silence and likely even anxiety about silence… Sincere practitioners should cultivate the friendship of like-minded and like-hearted people, who uphold the highest ideals of the spiritual path.”  ~Georg Feuerstein
