The traditional warm up in class is called Sun Salutations or Surya Namaskar in Sanskrit. Sun Salutes are a series of energizing, active poses linked together with the breath. Today’s sequence is based on the opposite of that. These are fluid poses linked together, however, they are a bit more gentle and include more side bending than forward folding. These are called Moon Salutations or Chandra Namaskar.
I enjoy Moon Salutations when I am not sure what to do when I step on my mat. I also enjoy them when it is night time and I am headed to bed. The poses that are tied together feel like a folding and unfolding of movement. They have a gentle rhythm that brings quiet to my brain immediately and relief to any back ache I may have.
Instead of listing the poses here, we have a short video made by David Allwright in our teacher training group. This will show you Moon Salutations on both sides. You can loop the video and practice again, or see what you remember. Click here to view. If you would like a write-up of this sequence, simply reply below and I will get you one.
Enjoy and sleep well… Namaste.
