Fear & Courage

turning dark to light

This week my kids and I went to see Rise of the Guardians- a kids’ movie with a battle between the boogie man and the guardians (Santa, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy and Jack Frost).  This movie had several pieces that I absolutely loved.  One was that Jack Frost’s only desire was to be believed in and to be seen.  The other is that each guardian had to figure out what their gift was at their core.  This was why they were chosen to be guardians.  The last was a lesson in dealing with fear.

At the climax of the movie, all the guardians and a few children are fighting the boogie man.  The boogie man uses Sandman’s gold dust and turns it into dark nightmares.  The children discover they can turn the dark dust back into light.  When asked how they do it, the lead child says, “I still believe in the boogie man,  I am just not afraid any more!”  Maybe things in life are like this too.  There are still going to be struggles and suffering as long as we are alive.  These things are all part of life, but they don’t have to be the focus of our lives.  There will always be something.  Maybe we can know this and no longer be afraid.  We can know there will be down times or events beyond our control.  Instead of trying to fix everything and get back on solid ground, maybe we can use a little bit of courage and let go of fear.  This can help us turn life’s dark patches back into light.
