One of the essential elements of my day is my home practice. I was never very consistent with this until a yoga student of ours explained it in this way:
Every day I commit to sitting on my mat. If I stay for more than a minute, wonderful. If I just sit and take one breath there, that is okay too.
Her point became so clear to me- each day, do something. It doesn’t matter what. Three years ago I took her advice. I put a mat out and would simply sit for a moment. Sometimes the sitting would encourage deep breathing. Other times, sitting would turn into down dog and a whole new sequence would emerge. Three years later, I have a daily yoga practice that I enjoy and cannot stand to miss. It has transformed my life in more ways than one.
The simple act of sitting on my mat for just one moment often inspired me to do more. Be patient, don’t think you need to practice an hour each day. Just sit, breathe and see what happens.
